Cult Party Kei Winter Inspiration

One of the newest Japanese styles to me, along with Shironuri, that I’m completely and utterly head-over-heels in love with is Cult Party Kei. Not too dissimilar from the English style that was in fashion a few years back, ‘Shabby Chic’, Cult Party Kei is all about the layering! Put some lace on that and WHAM-BAM, you have a Cult Party influence. The layering is not just an aesthetic, in this chilly season, it’s very practical and will keep you snug and toasty even if Jack Frost is successfully punching everyone in the face. Common motifs are religious iconography, crosses in particular – RED crosses specially. You bangin’ if you have a red cross.

Cult Party Kei is really a floaty, mysterious, sweet way of dressing. I love it because you can throw a bit of goth into it and you still look very feminine rather than RARRRGH LOOK AT MY SKULLS. There’s also a slap-dash of Fairy Kei in there, and Shironuri makeup looks INCREDIBLE in CPK. It’s simple to start – white or cream base and then build, build, build! The idea is to create a whimsical image, like a fairytale.

So here’s a collection of my all-time favourite CPK inspiration specifically for winter – gotta bundle it up, BABY IT’S COOOOOOOLD OUTSIDE!

Ethical Cute Christmas Gifts! And why you should shop ethical ♥

IMG_5621

I put on my best hippy face (and giant eyebrows face) I could for this post, but it really is something that’s close to my heart. I source most of my wardrobe second-hand from Charity shops, boot fairs and Ebay, not only is it more ethical to do so, but it’s cheaper AAAAND you get to keep those VAT pennies away from the naughty Government. WIN-WIN!

Being an ethical shopper is a big thing for me, and Christmas always proves to be tricky for the conscious. Black Friday sales happen in the biggest retailers, and they don’t always have the best rap-sheet when it comes to fairly sourcing their products, or even how they treat their own employees in the rush. FIGHT DA MAN! I AIN’T NO TESCO HOE! And a happy new year to you too.

bf

Ethical shopping means knowing and supporting companies who source their products fairly, and as ethically as possible. In today’s world where sweatshops are still thought of as a 90’s ‘thing’ that ended and now everything is hunky-dory-companies-aren’t-bastards-happy-shopping-land, and we have corporations like Wal-Mart who have more financial clout than entire COUNTRIES, we really need to make an effort to ensure that no cruelty is in the products we purchase. Where we put our money is effectively how we vote for companies in the free market. YAY ECONOMIC THEORY

So I have scoured the internet looking for the cutest pressies you could ever beg Father Christmas for – and be ethical about it at the same time! All so you don’t have to keep looking at the same hippy bags wondering where on earth all the ethical goods you really want are instead.

The one stumbling block I really had was how to approach sourcing your lolita clothing and accessories as finding out the origins of the tailoring involved is hard to trace with brands like Baby The Stars Shine Bright or Angelic Pretty. How are you supposed to find all that out with only a conversational level of Japanese to rely on? So for that reason, I avoided picking branded things, unless they came specifically from an ethical company. But I found lots of home-grown alternatives, and it’s so important to support the indie designers to help them keep creating all the awesome stuff you could ever want!! I especially love Shinku Rose‘s stuff. HAPPY FASHION FACE 😀

Dying my hair from blonde to LILAC!

purple, lilac, hair, dye, head, review, crazy, colour, lavender, pastel, gyaru, winter, 2014, cute, kawaii, tutorial, blonde, dreads

I’ve wanted to go lilac for a while now – one of those mythical unicorn colours that just looks amazing, but is such a light shade that just thinking about how it would take to my hair would give me a migraine, and then I’d get distracted by shiny things and/or Christmas.

yes

So now that I’ve done it – and it worked – I can give you a step-by-step how I did it. I had to retouch my roots, and unfortunately I didn’t take photos of that process, but here’s a quick run-down:

Dying my roots to a light blonde

Products used: Jerome Russell Blonde Lightening Powder, Jerome Russell Cream Developer – Vol 40 (high vol, but means you can have it on for less time. If you have a sensitive scalp, use 30 vol or lower, and leave on for longer, but no longer than 90mins)

Here’s Heliely Hyde’s tutorial on root touch-up:

White-ish yellow roots? CHECK!

Dying my hair lilac!

Ok, so I foolishly didn’t take photos during the application process (and if I had I would have a purple iPhone instead of a white one as I was doing it all by myself) but to start, always ALWAYS ALWAYS put vaseline around your hair line, ears and back of your neck. You don’t want to look like your hair is melting over your face or that you got into a fight and they punched your hairline and ears. I used Crazy Color’s Lavender (BUY IT HERE). Apply all over your hair, you don’t need to prioritise any parts as you can leave this dye on as long as you want, and it won’t damage your hair, just make sure you work it right down the strands or you’ll have patchy locks.

Once you finish applying it all over – USE THE MAGIC CLING FILM! You’ll want to keep as much moisture in as possible so it acts like a conditioner. Also you can do normal things around the house without leaving purple paw prints everywhere. Plus you can pretend that you’re turning into a plastic monster and scare people in the house.

purple, lilac, hair, dye, head, review, crazy, colour, lavender, pastel, gyaru, winter, 2014, cute, kawaii, tutorial, blonde, dreads

I developed it for a grand total of 20 mins. Any longer and it would have gone a very bright purple, and I wanted it to look more lilac. If you want the colour to be longer lasting, leave it on for a full hour, it will be brighter and more purple, but will fade over time to get the pastel lilac you want. HEY, MY HAIR’S CLEAN!

Aaaaaand dry! Hair always lightens when dry, and because I didn’t develop it for long, some of the hair is lighter than the rest, giving it some pinky tones. HAIR ACCIDENT WIN! Weird side effect – the dye didn’t take well to the newly bleached roots, so I now have silver roots. Once the hair settles down I’ll go over the roots to get them purple too, although I like the contrast. The dye wasn’t on my dreads long enough to change them, only a few took the purple in – but it made the rest silver!

purple, lilac, hair, dye, head, review, crazy, colour, lavender, pastel, gyaru, winter, 2014, cute, kawaii, tutorial, blonde, dreads

Final product! Very happy with my lilac, although I’m a little skeptical as to how long it’s going to last, as I can’t use conditioner with my dreads. For all you non-dreaded people out there – put a little bit of your dye in your conditioner, it will top up the colour every time you wash your hair 🙂

Christmas Tree Inspiration!

Christmas Tree Inspiration!

ZYxBDZ9

It’s the beginning of December and that means CHRISTMAS TREES!! If you’re anything like me, you will have spent the past month obsessing over the theme of this Christmas, making mood boards, generally squee-ing whenever anyone mentions Christmas (or you remember Christmas is coming scaring everyone around you), and/or blurting out Christmas items you see in shop windows like you have seasonal festive Tourettes (again, scaring everyone around you). So if you’re stuck or you’re like me, you just like looking at pictures of Christmas trees and losing half your working day, then I’ve got a few different themes to help you get started! #kawaiichristmas

Kawaii pink tree inspiration

The pink tree has quite a following now, which means you can pick up the pink bases quite cheaply from a lot of different retailers, and is PERFECT for decorating with your favourite kawaii items! Kawaii Le Cuirot of staysuperkawaii.blogspot.co.uk has done an amaaaazing job on her kawaii tree: http://staysuperkawaii.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/hello-kitty-christmas-cute-decorations.html

xmas, christmas, tree, inspiration, kawaii, pink, blue, december, yule, yuletide, white, baubles, lights, kawaiichristmas, spookyruthy, london, uk

As you can see, there is a no-holds-barred element to pink trees – got a cute plushie? PUT THAT ON! Printout of a cupcake? GET ON MAH TREE! Earrings you don’t wear anymore? PURPOSE FOUND. Luckily this means that it shouldn’t cost you loads of money to really go OTT with the tree decorating, as half the stuff you’ll already own! It’s just a case of balancing it all out with some well-placed baubles.

Blue tree inspiration! (I’m not Frozen obsessed at all…)

Blue based Christmas trees are very hard to come by, and if you do find them, they’re pain-inducingly expensive, so your best bet is to go for a snow-effect tree, or a white tree – that way you’ll make sure your blue decorations really stand out. I’ll be uploading my tutorial on getting a snow-effect on your tree for £3 rather than paying through the roof for a pre-made one – so watch this space, my Christmas lovers!

xmas, christmas, tree, inspiration, kawaii, pink, blue, december, yule, yuletide, white, baubles, lights, kawaiichristmas, spookyruthy, london, uk

Common motifs for the blue effect (or the LET IT GOOOOO effect as I like to call it… once again, not Frozen obsessed) are snowflakes, pinecones, snow generally, and if the last picture is to be believed, snowmen dressed as babies, which I think is a must-have. Stock up on white ribbon, and some standard blue and silver baubles and your base is ready to go – you can always customise them later (tutorial to come)!

Nice and red and ‘sort of’ traditional trees

I say ‘sort of’ because I’m not really hugely into traditional style trees myself, but these are probably as close as I’ll ever get to a traditional tree, and it’s best to out up some inspiration for red trees as so many of you love it 🙂 As with the blue trees, red artificial trees are rare, so the best bases to go for are the white base, or the normal green base (with or without the snow effect, up to you). Red is a very strong colour, so balance it out with some well-placed white decorations. Or go completely loony and go Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed like the bottom-left tree!

Aaand, some random inspiration!

I SUMMON YOU GLOVE-TREE TO DO MY EVIL MERRY BIDDING…. HO HO HO!! FINGER-LICKIN’ CHRISTMAS

xmas, christmas, tree, inspiration, kawaii, pink, blue, december, yule, yuletide, white, baubles, lights, kawaiichristmas, spookyruthy, london, uk

Nyan-cat tree, a stroke of absolute genius. I salute you, clever meme-loving Christmas friend.

And obligatory cat-picture, of course. If I was a fuzzy feline, I too would attempt to stage dive the tree. You’re my hero, Cat God of Christmas Rock.

So Christmas-obsessives out there – let me see your trees! ESPECIALLY IF THEY’RE KAWAII!! Spread the Kawaii Christmas luuuurve about and don’t forget to check back for the upcoming tutorials!
